Carly Beyer- Final Project
Carly Beyer Photo Final Statement
For
my final project, I photographed simple outdoor scenes in a gloomy and low
light setting. I wanted to be sure that whatever I photographed not only interested
the viewer, but also myself because without my own personal interest I knew the
images would not feel genuine. I decided to photograph in specifically low
lighting because I feel like taking scenic images and distorting them into a
gloomy and haunted version of themselves is very interesting. I wanted my
photos to sit on the unexpected side and make the viewer think about the scene
or image in front of them. I feel that images that make you linger or spend
time on them have a greater effect on the viewer and will ultimately be more
interesting to them. Distorting my images through either a long exposure and
shake or Photoshop are the two main ways I tried to achieve that goal.
Originally,
my vision for this final project was to gain inspiration from Barbara Ess’ photos
and use that to develop my images. In the beginning, I was worried that my
photos would be more Ess than my own, and that I would only continue to mimic
her style instead of branching out into my own. However, coming to the end of
this project, I am very glad that I did branch away from Ess’ style and begin
to develop images that felt like something I personally envisioned rather than
mimicked.
