Marc Wendelski
Marc Wendelski is a geometrician anarchist, a meticulous amateur, a liberate surveyor. In his book “nage libre” he used his camera to capture landscapes and people. In most of his pictures he used diagonal or asymmetrical structure to composed his pictures. And the square pictures, with all sides of equal length, help him to emphasize the objects in the picture. Also, he used wide angle lenses to picture landscapes. Wide angle lenses give you a wide view and it’s perfect for capturing expansive landscapes. In Marc Wendelski’s pictures, the wide angle lenses help him to capture the whole landscapes and since wide angel make things look far away, it makes the scene magnificent. When noticing the color of his pictures, they always have a low saturation. The color in the pictures are not faithful to be reality. Even in the photos he probably took in summer, which trees are green, they convey a desolate feeling. Among all his photos, the sky is always white or light grey and the sky takes a big part in some of the photos. These features set the tone of his pictures which is melancholy, solitude and far away as if it’s in your dreams or memories.

Mika Ninagawa is a Japanese photographer born in October 18, 1972. She is known for her brightly colored photographs of flowers, goldfish, and landscapes. In her book “a piece of heaven”, he pictured everything she saw, for example, a pretty goldfish, a nice pink strawberry, a good-looking young lady, birds, nature etc. She likes to take the picture up close to the object she was interested in. She doesn’t care about putting the whole object in the frame and sometimes in the picture, only part of the objects is in the frame for example the leg of the children in the water. Also, in many of her pictures, she used a high aperture to show the sense of motion it could be the object is moving, like a swimming goldfish. But more interesting, in the pictures of an old lady sitting in the casino, the whole picture is blurry. In that picture, she shows the motion of the photographer. These kind of picture gives people the sense of our daily like photo took by our smartphone. When people see something interesting, they quickly take out their phone and took a photo. Don’t considering the quality of the image, people just want to capture the things they see quickly. The most obvious feature is the bright color of her photographs, the high saturation gives her pictures the sense of warmth and vitality. Just like the name of the book, her pictures give me the feeling of looking at the beautiful world through her eyes, the sense of happiness of seeing the grateful things in the world. The world is beautiful like heaven in her camera and she shows a piece of the world in her photographs.

Martin Parr is a British documentary photographer. As a documentary photographer, his pictures are mainly about people and events going on. Parr use macro lens and ring flash to put his subject “under the microscope” in their own environment. In the photo book “Think of Scotland”, he pictures people’s daily life, events, landscapes, food. From these aspects, he fully presents the look of Scotland to the viewers. The way he focuses in his photos is very interesting. In many pictures, there is an event going on, instead of focusing on the people participate in the event (athletes, man milking a cow), he focuses on something closer to him, for example the audience or the balloon which someone is holding. With the events being the back ground and being blurry, it gives people the feeling of being at the place themselves and being a part of it. Also, Parr is good at photo crowds. In some of the pictures, there are many people and animals. He can structure the pictures perfectly to create a special feeling with the subjects filling the whole frame but not looking messy.
